Distribution network communication is critical for distribution automation of the entire network. The widely used communication systems include optical fiber, carrier wave, microwave, radio and so on. However, no single system can satisfy the needs of distribution automation at all levels.The distribution network of Zhangye is mostly at10kV level, which serves90%of the users. Due to the historical reasons, the network suffers from very low distribution automation and the lack of communication system, which severely affects the network reliability. Given the rapid economic growth, it is imperative to enhance distribution automation and build the communication system.This paper introduces the applications of power network distribution automation. The use of communication systems in distribution automation is discussed at length and the common communication systems are compared. Finally, based on the characteristics of Zhangye’s distribution network and the12th Five-Year Plan of the city, according to the feasibility analysis of the new technology, we design a well-suited communication system, which takes into account the factors of costs, reliability, and safety.The core of this paper is the feasibility analysis of the new technology and the architecture of communication system. We provide a feasible plan for Zhangye’s distribution network, which has been applied to a number of test sites.
