The formation and development of the building is derived from natural adaption.Since the time of "diging for cave, constituting wood for nest", our ancestors haveexplored over a long period, create a variety of residential forms to adapt to thenatural environment limited in resources and technology. In hot and humid area ofsouthern China,a type of densely built tube house are widely exist, such dwellings aresingle bay, perpendicular to the street or river developing into a strip plane in depth. In order to solve the problems of natural ventilation and lighting, a few small patiosare interspersed, and a series of strategies are developed. Extended to high densitybuilding cluster of four or five stories in the vertical direction, it is very effective insaving urban land.In this thesis, quantitative analyses are processed in order to subject the strategiesof natural ventilation in tube house in this area. The strategies are then applied inmodern congregate dwelling design, exploring a new direction of expressing localcharacteristics in modern congregate dwelling design.the research include following sections:1. Organise local meteorological data to analyze the characteristics of the hot andhumid climate in Fujian and Guangdong, pointe out that the natrual ventilation themost important measures for building to adapt to hot and humid climate. Due to thenatural geographic barrier or language barriers in communication, Fujian sea, Hakkaand Cantonese culture are developed, forming different regions in Fujian andGuangdong. Across different cultural area, the tube house are widespread in the hotand humid area. this is the result of adapting to the shared regional climate.2. Use the measured data and numerical simulation to analyse wind pressureand buoyancy ventilation of different types of group and unit of tube house. In grouplevel, the courtyard, the streets and allays are important in natural ventilationorganizations; in unit level,it is relied on internal corridor and patio to organizationnatural ventilation, and the different level of sloping roof combination can guide thewind toward a favorable direction. buoyancy ventilation which is persistent and stableis very important in both the group and unit level.3. Search for the connection of the traditional tube house and modern congregate dwelling design, exploring modern continuation of ventilation methods from bothgroup and unit level of traditional residential. The innovation of this paper is mainly reflected in the following three aspects:①assorted by the tube pattern, explore the method of ventilation in response to thehot and humid climate, with the formation of tube house across different geographicaland cultural in group and the unit level;②by actually measured and numericalsimulation, analyze in quantity and summarize the ventilation methods;③theoretical analyses combined with congregate dwelling design practice, explore thenew method of the tradition continuation.
