Generally, Trip Generation Rate (TGR) is one of the most important parameters that reflectsthe relationship of city land-use and transportation development. Also, TGR is the basis of UrbanTransport Planning and Traffic Impact Analysis (TIA), etc. As a new retail mode, hypermarkethas been rapidly developed in China. The project sites are mostly located in the downtown areaof city. The great attraction to crowd increases the traffic pressure on roads around Hypermarket, deteriorates the traffic conditions, and even leads to traffic jams. For this reason, studies on therelationship between the characteristics of hypermarket and TGR have significant roles foralleviating urban traffic pressure.First, this paper reviews the history achievements of trip generation rate based on theland-use at home and abroad, summarizes the advanced experience of developed countries, andanalyzes the deficiencies and problems of domestic research and practice, as well as proposed thedirection and focus of the study on trip generation rate based on a kind of land-use in a region.Secondly, this paper summarizes the traffic classification standard for the city land-use, andclassifies the commercial land-use referencing to "Trip Generation". Through the researches onthe own characteristics and the traffic characteristics of hypermarket, it provides standards for thehypermarket classification based on the traffic characteristics.Then,10samples from the hypermarkets in Nanjing are selected to investigate the buildingfeatures, the customer’s travel characteristics and the trip generation. The analysis of survey dataconcludes the proportion of traffic way to travel, car share rate, the passenger flow trip generationrate, the vehicle travel rate in workdays and holidays based on business area with the simpleregression fit and the analysis of quantitative laws.In addition, the factors that affect trip generation of hypermarket, the location, accessibilityof public transportation, business area and the number of parking garages are analyzed in thispaper. The location factors and accessibility of public transportation is also quantized. Finally, three impact indicators, the relative location potential energy, the accessibility ofpublic transportation and the business area, are selected as the independent variables to employ inMatlab software which establishes the multiple regression equations by the multiple regressionfitting, the effect of the model is remarkable. Also, this paper gave daily and peak hour tripgeneration rates of hypermarket in Nanjing in workdays and holidays, it could be the referencedata of the TIA.
