With the sustained and rapid development of China’s economy, the size of thecities expands, the population grows, resulting in a sharp increase in travel demand,which is in conflict with the limited space and road traffic resource of the city. Publictransportation plays an important role in solving this problem, but because of thediversification of urban residents’ travel demand and the diversification of travelmode, the proportion of public transportation of the city traffic structure in ourcountry is too small, and the configuration is very unreasonable. Therefore, it isnecessary to analyze the travel mode choice behavior of urban residents.Firstly, this paper expounds the connotation of travel behavior of urban residents,thinks that travel behavior is an interaction process of urban environmentalcharacteristics, travel mode characteristics and the traveler characteristics. Thenclassifies the available travel modes, and describes their characteristics anddevelopment trends. According to the connotation of travel behavior of urbanresidents, this paper analyzes the factors influencing the choice of travel mode ofurban residents from the following three aspects: urban environmental characteristics,travel mode characteristics and traveler characteristics.Secondly, through the study of utility theory and its application in travel modechoice, analyzes the shortcomings of traditional utility function, proposes to use thecloseness to ideal travel mode to replace the traditional travel utility, this methodavoids the problem that travel modes with different influencing factors can notcompare with each other directly, and improves the defects of original research thattreat the all the difference equally.Then, according to the study of the connotation of travel behavior of urbanresidents, the classification of travel mode, the influence factors of travel mode choiceand so on, using Beijing’s third residents travel survey data, selects bus, rail transit,walk, bike, car in total5main travel modes and20related factors, makes binarylogistic regression analysis, through detailed analysis steps, main influencing factorsof5kinds of travel modes’ choice are selected.Finally, according to the influencing factor of each travel mode getting throughbinary logistic regression analysis and the proposed new travel utility, constructstravel mode choice model of urban resident, and gives the system processes of model calculation. Taking Beijing as an example, this paper verifies the model, draws thedistance curve of each travel modes’ share rate, the result shows that the model candescribe urban residents’ travel mode choice well.For urban residents, study on this problem can help them choose the optimaltravel mode; and for traffic managers, it can provide reference for the proportionregulation of each travel mode and the traffic construction.
