With the development of China society, the electric power demand is increasingyear by year. As the key component connecting the power system and consumers, thedistribution grid has a direct influence on the reliability and quality of power supply. In the analysis of distribution grids, the power flow calculation plays a vital role thatprovides basis for the reconfiguration, planning and load forecasting in the operationof distribution grid. The Multi-agent technology, as the focus of artificial intelligence(AI) research, is widely used in power systems due to its unique advantages. Forlarge-scale complicated systems, the Multi-agent system acts excellently as themodeling and simulation tool. In this paper, the Multi-agent system is adopted in thepower flow calculation of distribution grids based on the study of the agent model. The main work of this paper is as follows:The research status of AI and the application of Multi-agent technology in powersystems are introduced. Analysis on the agent based formal model and structuremodel are performed. The coordination model of Multi-agent system is studied. Theagent model with modular structure is proposed.Considering the fact that distribution grids are generally large complex non-linearsystems, the application of Multi-agent technology needs a favorable simulationplatform. With careful analysis on the advantages and disadvantages of Multi-agentmodeling and simulation platforms worldwide, JADE is selected for the developmentof power flow calculation of distribution grid. The basic methods for power flow calculation of distribution grid are analyzed. Two types of agent, ControlingAgent and RunningAgent, are designed with modularstructure. The forward-backward sweep method is employed and embedded into theaction module of the agent. The Multi-agent based power flow calculation program ofdistribution grids is implemented on JADE platform using Java language, and thenvalidated via IEEE standard test feeders.
