Highly modernization and informatization of today’s society makes thepresentation of traditional culture in the modern urban environment face a great crisis.Since the cultural symbols which represent the city’s tradition have specialenvironmental significance and humanistic significance, then carrys outsystematically summarizes and innovates of its manifestations and use practices, willprovide new development ideas in environmental design of rapid urbanization. This thesis starts from the current situation of environmental design in Chinesecities, makes a detailed explanation of the basic concept of semiotics based on thestudy of the theory of semiotics from home and abroad. Further it introducessemiotics into the field of design, discusses the transmission process and the culturalvalues of design symbols. Through analysing issues of the concept of urbanenvironmental design and how environmental design symbols achieve transmissionprocess, provides the theoretical basis for implementing the classification as well ascategorization of complicated physical form in environmental design. In themeanwhile, examining the attributes change of traditional Chinese symbol in thedevelopment of history through semiotics, to find the root causes of the currentproblems which traditional cultural symbols faces, and take the region as a basis tojudge whether the design symbols meet various requirements of transmission process. On this basis, proposes a specific model of the “regenerative development” for thetraditional Chinese cultural symbols in modern environmental design. Finally, throughthe two typical urban environment design cases, uses design practices to prove theresults of the theoretical analysis. In the last part of the thesis, the author puts forwardthe deficiency of current research and the outlook of the development of traditionalculture in the modern environment design. The research achievements of this thesis can be summed up in the following threepoints:1. The contradiction between traditional culture symbols losing its originalpractical function and modern environmental design primary pursuing practicalfeatures, is the main reason that causes the plight of the development of traditionalculture.2."Regenerative development" requires designers to analyse the functional requirements of the place firstly during the modern environmental design, then choosethe traditional cultural symbols system based on region, and introduce new forms ofsymbols which can provide practical function in that place after choosing the elementsof traditional cultural symbols system based on its functionality. The new symbolssystem which is formed by the re-combination and superimposition of old and newelements, not only provides current practical values, but also retains the symbolicvalues of the original traditional cultural symbols, which achieves the purpose ofgiving the traditional symbolic values to modern design.3. Combining with the design cases, through analysing the design process anddesign generation effect of those cases, examines whether "regenerative development"mode has guiding significance for modern urban environment design. Therefore, traditional cultural symbols have practical significance and spirit ofthe times in the research of development mode in modern environmental design. Onlyby respecting the Chinese traditional culture on the basis, using modern ways ofreconstruction to create environment design with ethnic traditional culture soul, thecontemporary Chinese cities would be able to keep up with the footsteps ofinternational development in the wave of globalization, and inherit our own nationalspirit at the same time.
