The vehicle safety issue is still a problem that can not be ignored in the modern society, people have paid more and more attention on the hazards of traffic safety as well as the problem of thefting and robbing motor vehicles. Accompany with the development of the WEBGIS、GPS technology and the popularity of the map application, it is extraordinarily important to develop a vehicle positioning system based on WEBGIS.The thesis designs and achieves a kind of vehicle positioning system based on WEBGIS, users can observe if the vehicle is onlined and the location of the vehicle real timed through the browser, users can also query the historical trajectory of the vehicle.Starting with the works on the research and development trend of the WEBGIS at home and abroad as well as the GPS,3G technology, this paper designs the overall framework of the vehicle positioning system, the whole system is divided into three parts:device, server and client and selects the B/S structure as the system framework; Then introduces the key Google Maps API which realize the WEBGIS, and analyses the features of the technology that involved in the client design and the server setting up. It lays a theoretical foundation for the system; After that is the detailed design of the vehicle information database, we choose the MySQL database by comparing the characteristics of various types of database, then we design the logical structure of the database in accordance with the needs analysis and create the table structure of the script file; Finally, on the design and implementation of the vehicle location, we use ExtJS for the web page layout design, adopt Google Maps as the GIS map, and implement the function of the vehicle positioning and the historical trajectory playback by calling the Google Maps API and the AJAX technology. Been tested, the system achieves the design requirements of the vehicle positioning system in terms of functionality, performance and cost.
