As the city steps up its modernization, its spatial pattern is going through tremendous changes. High-risers are springing up everywhere in the city with the development of new urban area, renovation of old city as well as the booming of real estate. On the other hand, growing population leaves the city ever crowded with insufficient space for outdoor activities, among other social issues. It’s commonly held hope among urban-dwellers to seek for healthy and comfortable outdoor space. Public space is critical in facilitating people’s interaction and communication, so its very existence not only enriches spatial environment of the city, but enlarges space for people’s outdoor activities, which echoes human-orientated development. This thesis puts forward the concept for civil public space by starting from confusions about urban public space, then moves on to its features and functions with a summary of types of civil public space. Through a great deal of on-site and document research, an analysis is made concerning city dwellers, the user and transformer of civil public space from the perspective of its spatial form and the thesis concludes with reasons for those changes. It is pointed out finally that civil space development is going hand in hand with commercial space development.
