According to the National Accident Sampling System, side collisions represent15%to20%of the automotive crashes in which at least one of the occupants was injured but are the cause of25%to30%of serious and fatal injuries encountered in all car accidents. Pelvis injuries are very common in side impact. In order to enhance the safety of vehicles and protect occupants, it’s necessary to study the response of pelvis in side impact. As part of the Project of Basic Application and New Technology of Tianjin:the development and application study of the hip-joint model based on injury mechanical behavior and geometry (10JCYBJC25900), this study created the50th finite element models of female and male pelvis, and verified the availability of the model. Side impact test was carried on using these models to find the injury mechanical behavior of pelvis and compared the response of male and female pelvis in side impact. The main content of this study is as follows:1the50th3D finite element models of female and male pelvis were created based on computed tomography and the availability of the model was verified;2side impact tests were set up using the model and found that acetabulum, sacroiliac joint, pubic rami and pubic symphysis were more easily to be injured where tress concentration was more easily to be found;3with the comparison between the pelvis responses of female and male in side impact, results showed that the male pelvis can bear a peak force of4.62KN, and3.55KN for female pelvic; the distance of male pelvic is smaller than that of female pelvic, and the fracture load of female pelvis is3.0KN;4compare the results between male and female pelvis in side impact, it is expected that the geometrical characteristics and different bone mineral should be taken into account in later research. With the research of pelvis injury in side impact, the injury mechanical behavior of pelvis could be found, and these data could help to design the vehicle safety devices to improve the safety of occupants. Besides, the study is of great helpful for making traffic laws.
