Pedestrian traffic occupies a particularly important position in the urban transportsystem. Especially researches on exclusive walking without other traffic modesinterfering are the foundation of pedestrian traffic theories, the basis of walkingfacilities planning and designing, and the warranty of pedestrian security managementof large-scale activities and crowd evacuation. In China, the mountain city is widely distributed. It is the environmentalcharacteristics of mountain city itself which caused many ladder sections, complex pathand variety of choice for the direction. In order to study the traffic characteristics of pedestrian on the ladder sections ofmountain city, Chongqing as a typical mountain city is an example, choosing the typicalladder sections to take large amounts of data through field surveys and video, usingstatistical software SPSS to deal with data. From the viewpoints of individual pedestrianand pedestrian flow, this paper is focused on the research of walking behavior andpedestrian flow characteristics. It contains individual pedestrian traffic, traffic flow dataanalysis, traffic flow models, and level of service. The main conclusions are as follows:①It quantitatively studies the characteristics of individual pedestrian traffic formtwo aspects: free speed distribution from pedestrians and the individual desired walkingspeed, and summarizes the characteristics of pedestrians walking on the two-way ladder,Pedestrians are analyzed factors such as gender, pedestrian facilities expect theinfluence degree of the walking speed of the individual. The designed speed matchingthe compositive characteristics of individual pedestrian is obtained further.②The methods of data collection and analysis are set up to meet the requirementsof traffic flow modeling. Comparative analysis of the calculation methods for density, more accurate methods are pointed out.③Based on a large amount of video data, using mathematical statistics analysismethod, speed-density, flow-density traffic flow model of ladder ascending anddescending are set up. Through behavior of pedestrians on the ladder, the changes ofpeople traffic model characteristics on the two-way flow are analyzed.④Based on differentiating congested and non-congested flow status, and examiningthe ability for choosing expected speeds of different types of pedestrians, that are fastpedestrians, normal pedestrians and slow pedestrians, new classification principle and method for Level of Service (LOS) are proposed. Combined with pedestrian traffic flowmodels, the LOS criteria and their applicability for each type of walking facility are putforward.
