Mechanical design is a repetitive process during which the structural parametersof the products require constant adjustment and modification. Every change of thedimensions would be likely to cause a huge amount of redundant tasks in solidmodeling and increase the design time significantly. Advanced platform of parametricdesign should be set up in order to guarantee the design quality and improve the designefficiency of mechanical products. A practical designing system must be capable ofgenerating both3D models and2D drawings. However, the projection drawingscreated by common CAD software automatically have a lot of disadvantages. They donot conform to the drafting standard or meet with the processing requirements beforemanual modification. Therefore manufacturing companies would like to finishstructural design in UG and generate drawings in AutoCAD. By using of secondarydevelopment technology, the two categories of software can work cooperatively andtheir advantages can be combined. Taking arc water chamber of steam turbinecondenser as example, the paper researches the key technologies in the developmentprocess of parametric design system, which can generate both3D models andassociated2D drawings.Firstly, adopting database as the interface of UG and AutoCAD,2D/3Dbidirectional associated relationship is established across platforms. A variety ofdatabase operating functions to storage and manage design records are also developed,which allows the two systems to share information conveniently.Secondly, human-computer interface with part lists calculated by input parametersimmediately is created. Interfacing programs of UG internal application and MFCdialog is compiled. Algorithm of interference checking is proposed. Dynamic storageand invocation of parts information is realized by introducing linked-list data structure,well satisfies the requirement of a real time rapid program.When it comes to solid modeling based on UG/OPEN API, the methods of editingexpression and modeling by program are presented together with their respective scopeof application. The key techniques of object recognition and matrix transformation arealso reseached. A new method of automatic virtual assembly method based on nameddatum is proposed on the foundation of general traversal search algorithm. Through an example, the advantages and disadvantages of the two algorithms are compared andevaluated.Finally, the key technologies researched in this paper are applied to thedevelopment of condenser arc water chamber’s parameter-driven modeling system.The experimental result shows that it is definitely a successful application ofcomputer-aided design.
