In order to describe the function model normatively in the concept design, the functionontology theory is applied in the concept design stage. The function ontology is used to describethe function model. Then the function ontology is used to select appropriate structure toimplement the corresponding function. Lastly the intelligence algorithm is introduced to selectthe best solution.First the connotation of function ontology theory including the components, relationshipsbetween components and their roles in the function model is expounded. The key concepts offunction ontology are extracted and expressed in the ontology way. The structure knowledge inspecific domain and the flow knowledge are used to construct the design knowledge repository.Then the knowledge repository is applied to design specific products. The customer’s needis considered primarily to determine the total function. Then the total function is divided intosub-functions according to different theories. All the functions are expressed with function entityfrom function ontology. After the function model is constructed, suitable structures are chosen toimplement bottom functions. Lastly the Genetic Algorithm is used to choose the best solution.Finally, a software platform is developed based on the database and object orientedprogramming language technology. The modules corresponding to the introduced knowledge andmethod are designed. A3-Axis Servo Transfer System is designed under the help of the softwareand the proposed theory is verified effectively.
