With the development of economy, China’s automotive market and industry arerapidly developing. As technology continues to develop, automotive technology andmanufacturing level are growing convergence. So consumers will pay more attentionto car design. Chinese market becomes saturated and consumer psychology continuesto mature. The market needs the design which can meet the Chinese aesthetic needs.Car design is a very important part of the new product development process. Chineseautomotive companies have paid more attention to the car styling.China is a long history of civilization. China has5,000years history and hasaccumulated a rich cultural heritage and formed its unique culture. Although the time ischanging, many aesthetic features still remain today, forming a unique aesthetic cultureand affecting Chinese people now and in the future.Today, foreign mature automotive companies have formed their unique styling.Different style embodies the specific aesthetic culture of various ethnic groups.Because China’s automotive industry just has a short history, most of local companiescannot get rid of plagiarism, follow and commissioned to design. Their design isunable to form their unique brand image and unique Chinese styling. Because of thelack of world-class brands images, Chinese local companies cannot gain a competitiveadvantage in the world.This paper focuses on the defects in China’s automotive design innovation and studies on car design method based on the traditional Chinese aesthetic characteristics. Firstly, this paper discusses the concepts and ideas of traditional Chinese artifacts and grasps the basic direction of the traditional Chinese aesthetic characteristics. Then, on the basis, combined with car design aesthetic principles and basic processes, this paper discusses and sums up the design method which applies aesthetic characteristics of Chineseto the innovation automotive design.Finally, with this design method this research designs several conceptvehicles. At the same time, the design method was validated and improvedduring these design practices. These design practices also shows that the design method based on the aesthetic characteristics of the Chinese people is veryuseful in getting a car design which meets the aesthetic needs of Chineseconsumers.
