The auto styling is the organic combination of advanced technology and modern aesthetic conception, integrating both the scientific technology and molding art in a high degree into the auto product. The auto molding involves many technological factors in fields like mechanical engineering, aerodynamics, human engineering etc. Moreover, because of the automobile aerodynamic and automobile energy, safety and exhaust have closely related, and have direct influence on them. Based on the theories of aerodynamics, this paper is committed to the design research and analysis by means of aerodynamic methods systematically. In this paper, we try to analyze the relation between the car shape and the aerodynamics through induction and summarizing, direct the car contour design in adoption of relevant knowledge in the field of product design, and analyze and evaluate the molding results from both the perspective of science and art. The main contents of this paper are as follows:1. Systematically summarized key parts of the car aerodynamic resistance characteristicsThe car's basic framework is conditioned by mechanical engineering and human engineering which restrict the car's outer shape inner-structurally. The outline of the automobile in particular that of the car is not mainly decided by the aerodynamics, by contrast, is conditioned by various requirements taking into considerations the practicability, economical efficiency and the aesthetics etc, to which the auto aerodynamics are confined. The main focus of the auto aerodynamics is to try to reduce the air resistance coefficient. In this paper we discussed the effects on the auto aerodynamic performance by key parts of the car's outline like the front end of the car, shape of windshield and engine hood, coping shape, body profile shape, body stern shape and the body bottom shape etc, and then, we further made it clear that the optimization in detail for the car outline is the effective means to reduce the aerodynamic resistance and improve the start-up performance. From that, we listed some cars with best design of aerodynamic performance and concluded that the improvements in all parts of the car outline will be likely to reduce the aerodynamic resistance.2. Contour design for instance carOver the past ten years the wedge-shape car has become the mainstream of car design. On the other hand, car's molding design is by no means of simple decoration for the car, rather, it has to shape the best car outline according to requirements in all aspects of the overall design, scientifically showing the car's character in terms of function, material processing and structure by means of art. The aesthetic discussion from the technical perspective of the auto molding focuses on the relation between the auto molding and technical development of different periods under the industrialization background in retrospect of the evolvement of auto molding in the history. We analyzed the molding process from both the scientific and aesthetic perspectives which involves drawing sketch, molding and rendering, and all the analysis is based on the relation between the outer shape of the car and the aerodynamic performance under the circumstance that China has been enjoying a splendid future on its development of economic car industry. We believe that the basic molding for Chinese domestic car should be based on the wedge-shape which will be the main pattern for molding with Chinese ethnic culture characteristics in line with the aesthetic principles. At the same time the comfort sit and driving should also be regarded as one of the design principle. In short, we try to improve our aesthetic conception from the technical perspective to organically combine the advanced science and technology with the modern taste so as to highly integrate science and technology into molding art.3. Analysis and evaluation on car contour designWith the rapid development of computer technologies the numerical simulation is booming, which provided a new perspective to study the car's aerodynamic performance. Compared with theoretic and experimental methods, the car flow field numerical simulation method enjoys more merits: the numerical simulation method is fast and there is no need for the time for design the mold and process the mold. For the already existed common program, only changes on the initial data is enough to obtain the characteristic and effects of the flow field which reduces the car developing period. In this paper, we apply the STAR-CD, CFD software to the established car mold to conduct the numerical simulation and analyzed the results. From the numerical simulation results we tested that the application of related knowledge of aerodynamics to the car contour design, combining both the science and aesthetic is of importance in practice.In retrospect of the history, the development of car outline has witnessed the process from case-shape, to the beetle shape, then to the boat shape and fish shape, and eventually to the wedge-shape. In the 21th century, the design mainstream for car will remain the streamline. Cars that meet not only the aerodynamic principles but also the aesthetic rules will be undoubtedly recognized by the auto industry circle and the general public and become popular. The perfect combination of aesthetic and aerodynamics for car molding will bring the car molding into a marvelous world with different design styles. The styles of car outline design based on the aerodynamics will be distinguished between each other rather than be like the machine-made. In this paper we discussed the car outline design based on the aerodynamics from several aspects to facilitate the solid foundation for a more specific and intensified research on the car aerodynamics in an all-round way.
