| Pavement on bridge is an important part of the vehicle system. However, orthotropicsteel bridge deck is prone to deform under load, and the situation of its stress is complicated,as well as impacted by overloaded trucks, road performance of its pavement requirements arerelatively high. The general heavy traffic asphalt is difficult to meet the requirements. Moreand more high-level asphalt pavement and steel deck pavement adopt polymer-modifiedasphalt. But the modified asphalt available currently can’t meet the demands of bridgeconstruction. The epoxy modified asphalt is a comparatively good material for pavingorthotropic steel decks. It can increase the adhesive strength of the bonding layer between thesteel bridge deck and the paving layer, and reduce diseases of the bridge deck pavement dueto the weak shear strength of the bonding layer. It has a very broad application prospects. This paper researched the novel materials of two components thermosetting asphaltdesignated epoxy asphalt, and they were binders for the top paving materials of the pavementand adhesive layer for the adhesive between the steel deck or concrete and the top pavingmaterials. Thermosetting epoxy asphalt materials were prepared by using petroleum asphalt, modified epoxy resin and curing agents. But there are the obvious differences between asphaltand epoxy resin such as polarity. The epoxy resins are polar substances, and the asphalt arenon-polar substances. It leads to low compatibility between epoxy resin and asphalt. Theepoxy resin was modified, and the compatibility of asphalt and epoxy was solved. The resultsshowed that modified epoxy resin can improve the compatibility between asphalt and epoxy, and the compatibility of asphalt and curing agents is well. The optimum ratio of curing agent and modified epoxy resin is determined by analysis ofthe tensile strength in epoxy asphalt. The optimum ratio of curing agentâ… and modified epoxyresin is0.8in epoxy asphalt binders,The optimum ratio of curing agentâ…¡and modified epoxyresin is0.9in epoxy asphalt adhesive layer. The effects of modified epoxy resin content on tensile strength, initial curing rate andphase structure were investigated by mechanical property test, brookfield viscosity andfluorescence microscope. The results showed that the tensile strength of epoxy asphalt willincrease gradually as the amount of epoxy resin increases, while the elongation at break will decrease as the content of epoxy resin increases. The curing rate of epoxy asphalt willincrease gradually as the amount of epoxy resin increases, and the curing rate of epoxyasphalt on160oC was more quickly than the curing rate of epoxy asphalt on150oC. The timethat epoxy asphalt binder viscosity increased1Paï¹’s was about55to70minutes on160oC,and the time that epoxy asphalt binder viscosity increased1Paï¹’s was about35to40minuteson160oC. Fluorescence microscope shows that the epoxy resin forms continuous phase whenthe amount of epoxy resin is40%,and the asphalt forms dispersed phase in the epoxy asphalt. |
