The buffer made with polyurethane is widely used in light industry,automotiveindustry and mechanical industry especially in the electric cylinder of small and mediumsizes because of its compact structure,economics and process ability convenient. Theresearch project presented in this paper aims at studying the process of the buffer andoptimizing its size.This paper was arranged into three distinct sections. Firstly, the properties ofnonlinear material and the constitutive relation of the polyurethane were analysed, aboveon which the compression and shear tests of the polyurethane material were conducted todetermine its physics parameters. Then the mechanical tests of polyurethane material weresimulated in the finite element simulation software ABAQUS by input the parametersobtained from the mechanical tests. The parameters were proved to be correct by thetestimony of the result of the simulation and the mechanical tests.Then buffers of differentsizes with practical condition were simulated. During the simulation,the maximumdeceleration of the mass block in models with different sizes of polyurethane bufferswere obtained. Lastly, The sizes of the buffer with minimum volume which is agreed withthe request of the maximum deceleration of the mass block is obtained by data handling,above on which an database was built. The goal that getting the optimal sizes of the bufferby simply inputting the restricted condition such as the load with a program compiledbased on VC++was achieved.
