Marine Engineering English (MEE) is one of core courses of marine engineering technologyprofession, and it belongs to the English for Specific Purposes (ESP), which is also a branch ofmaritime English, the working language used by engineers of ocean-going ships and in-shore staff.To some extent, the professional English level of the students, decides the future ability ofcompetency on board. Therefore, the teaching quality of this course, directly affects the ability ofeffective communication, closely relates to the overall quality of our seafarers and the size ofseafarers to the international labor market.The traditional MEE teaching methods focus on teaching grammar and translation, whichneglects the cultivation of students’ communicative competence, and is not conducive to mobilizethe enthusiasm of the students. Since the1980s, people gradually found Content-Based Instruction(CBI), which is not only beneficial to develop the language skills of the students, but also can helpstudents to acquire new knowledge, and it enables the teacher to achieve the dual goals of subjectknowledge and language proficiency, is an effective teaching method of teaching a foreign orsecond language.This thesis analyzes the meaning of the CBI, the theoretical basis as well as the main modeand combining the present situation of MEE teaching, it states the specific application of CBI inmaritime English teaching. Through the study into two classes of2010marine engineeringtechnology profession from Zhejiang International Maritime College, this thesis aims atdiscovering whether CBI can improve their enthusiasm of professional English learning, canimprove their professional English comprehensive ability as well as improve the effectiveness ofclassroom teaching. In this study, three means including the test, questionnaire, classroomobservation are used and the study results show that the CBI not only can improve theirenthusiasm of learning professional English, but also can improve their language comprehensiveabilities as well as consolidating professional knowledge, and is an effective teaching path to ESPreading courses.
