In recent years, the advancement of urbanization pushes forward with the vigorousdevelopment of small towns. Square, as an important part of public space in the smalltowns, is becoming more deficient, because of various reasons and restrictions. We areaiming to create a better environment in northwestern areas through reasonable methodand experience. Let people there could live in a beautiful environment, and improvetheir spiritual life.Therefore, In the specific design research of square landscape in northwest smalltowns, through analyzing the design cases of northwest square at home and abroad,summarizing the key point in design, and making research and analysis many times inHaiyuan town in northwest, we finally got the main point of designing Haiyuan squarewhich is combined the local geographical features and regional culture.Let’s take Haicheng square in Haiyuan town Ningxia province as the example, inorder to improve and enhance ecological environment and geographical characteristicsof Haiyuan, according to the plant on the improvement of the ecological environmentand the advantages existing in the square itself, through the research and analysis on soiland sand density for the rate of loss of moisture, changing the proportion of soil andsand in planting soil, the problem of lacking of water was solved the in dry area, and thedifficulty in plants grown was improved in arid regions. On the other hand, Ningxiacontains the rich cultural resources, such as the Islamic culture, Dongxiang culture, theNeolithic culture, the paper-cutting culture, flower culture, hypocentral culture, redculture and so on. Using flexible forms of square landscape combining the local culturein which not only can feel the continuation of culture but also can feel the strongregional characteristics, make a good display of local culture and folk customs. This article is based on the northwest town square design research and analysis, puttingforward my own views, and is aiming to improve the environment in the northwest andpromote local culture, and for future reference.
