Urbanization is an important indicator to measure the status of a regionaleconomic development; it is accompanied by modern development and division ofrefinement population to the urban concentration. In this paper, a review on the basisof the development process of urbanization in Xinjiang since the founding, analysesthe Xinjiang regional characteristics of the development of urbanization, urbanspatial and temporal distribution of the dynamic characteristics, the law and thefuture development trend, Application ESDA technical analyses urbanization inXinjiang spatial correlation, describing the spatial relationships between the county. The perspective from space objective analysis of the Xinjiang county urbanizationlevel of development space differences fully reveals the process of urbanization inXinjiang space, distribution patterns and evolution. With three phases of remotesensing data, With ERDAS IMAGINE9.2, ENVI4.5image processing software, Useunsupervised classification method to extract urban spatial information, Study ofcities land space expansion, the process of evolution. To provide a scientific basis forthe sustainable development of the oasis city; to build orderly regional spatialstructure, the coordination of regional urbanization provides a basis for decisionmaking. With the aid of the methods of statistical analysis and ESDA, this paper analysisthe temporal and spatial change of urbanization process as well as the differences ofregional development in Xinjiang from the perspective of spatial correlation of theurbanization level. The research result indicates that, regional differences ofurbanization level in Xinjiang have experienced two stages such as waving decreaseand slow increase. The urbanization level by non-agricultural population show adecresing spatial pattern from Nothern Xinjiang to Estern Xinjiang to SouthernXinjiang. From1978to2009, the spatial autocorrelation Morans′I of urbanizationlevel of different counties in Xinjiang has going up from0.2065to0.4414, andindicates that, the urbanization in Xinjiang shows a concentrating trend which showsa high value and a low value spatial phenomenon. And the concentration of lowvalue has a larger proportion. The local Moran’ I analysis shows that, the regionalurbanization level in Xinjiang shows a obvious polarization trend, which is higherurbanization level in Northern Xinjiang while that is lower in Southern Xinjiang. It isobvious that, a trend of central cities are gathering at the economic belt on thenorthern slope of TianShan Mountain will continue for a while; in the SouthernXinjiang, however, urban development show a trend of scattering, internal clustering disparities are very small. Therefore, in the Southern Xinjiang must develop theclustering capacity of central cities.Using multi-temporal satellite remote sensing data and GIS technology, urbanspatial feature information was extracted. And also using of urban expansionintensity, urban growth rate and the urban spatial form of compactness and fractaldimension index, the process and features of Xinjiang urban spatial-temporaldynamic changes during the1990-2010was analyzed. The main conclusions are asfollows: The cities of Xinjiang own unique natural environment and the oasiseconomic, which is decides the spatial distribution of cities. Many of the city’sdevelopment depend on the oasis, the cities formed a “hydrophilic” feature, Due toXinjiang’s vast territory, urban zone or Agglomeration was relatively concentratednear the traffic trunk. There are obvious differences in the propagation speed andstrength between the Southern and Northern Xinjiang. The cities of Northern SlopeEconomic Zone of the TianShan Mountain in Northern Xinjiang belong to therelatively fast expansion speed and relative high expansion intensity type, while thecities of Southern Xinjiang belong to slower expansion speed and low expansionintensity type. Analysis of the changes of compactness and fractal dimension ofXinjiang cities to find that average compactness of Xinjiang cities is a decliningtrend, while the fractal dimension is a growing trend. It indicated that on the spatialstructure of cities of Xinjiang tend to the loose and urban spatial structure is notreasonable. It is need to be improved.
