As an inheritance of nomadic civilization, the root of Mongols and itsculture can traced back from the Rouran, Xianbei to the Donghu, Huns or evenearlier hunting clans. Thus the developing history of Mongolian architecture alsoreflects the historical process of the Mongolian Plateau Civilization from huntingto nomadic, then to resident. Owing to the deficient research on Mongolianarchitecture and lack of some understanding of this process by the domesticacademic circle, this thesis will sort out the historical context of Mongolianarchitecture from the point of view of the Civilization change of MongolianPlateau. And based on the systematic historical research, it will also givescientific textual research and classification on all types of constructions long-term used by Mongolians since the9th century and their Chinese and Mongolianlanguage appellation, so as to construct the genealogical and typological systemof Mongolian architecture.A particular way of life creates a specific form of civilization, and alsoshapes a different way of dwelling. From Hunting to Sedentarization-oriented era,Mongols has used Troglodytism, Wigwam, Ger and Building with GerForm as their living place one after another. In this historical process,Mongolian architecture experienced or say has been experiencing twotransformation. The first one began in about9th Century when Wigwam wasreplaced by Ger, which marks the Mongols were stepping from Hunting toNomadic Era. The second one began in the second half of the16th Century andis continuing till today when Ger has been replacing by Architecture of theGer Form, and which is the reflection of Mongolian lifestyle’s transition fromnomadic to resident.With the arrival of the Globalization Era, the contemporary Mongolianarchitecture is facing the same conflicts between tradition and modern. In thishistorical background, to continuing and developing the uniqueness of Mongolianarchitecture, so as to make some contributions to the diversity ecological ofhuman modern architectural civilization, is bound to have intensive study on itsgenealogy and typology. Only after repeated returnning trip, identifying and rooting in tradition could the contemporary Mongolian architecture give birth tomodernity with its own properties. The purpose of the thesis is exactly based onsuch a contemporary significance of Mogolian architecture.
