The study tries to explore specific design methods on the core question how thedesign of buildings that need to be renovated in historical areas in Beijing keepsin agreement with traditional styles and features, taking the project of a courtyarddwelling design on Beichizi Street as an example. Through interpretation of currentplanning for historical areas and analyses on relevant cases, the study proposes threebasic principles for the design of buildings that need to be renovated:(1) to follow thetraditional styles and features;(2) to adapt to local conditions;(3) to make the best useof circumstances. According to these principles, the study regards the spatial formcontrol of buildings as the key point of design and the resolution of special problems asthe difficult point. The study, closely integrated with the project on Beichizi Street,makes further efforts to carefully analyze the existing conditions and traditional stylesof Beichizi area according to field survey data and historic maps. Based on these, itmakes the conclusion that the continuity of traditional features and the introductionof contemporary design ideas should be combined together. At last, the example ofBeichizi Street project serves as a direct application of this design method.
