Motor grader is a kind of wheel traction machinery that mainly works with its moldboard.The work resistance of the moldboard, the main load source of grader, has a large variationrange. At present, domestic grader exists some common problems. When it works under lightload, power utilization rate of engine is not high, thus brings about surplus power and pooreconomical efficiency. When it works under heavy load, the tires will slip and wear seriously.On the basis of summarizing the current developing situation of overseas mainstreamgraders, the methods of variable-power control, the critical technology, was studied in thispaper. In view of the common hydrodynamic graders in our country, the characters of maintransmission components in driving system was analysed. Variable-power control methods forthe engine was studied in one type of domestic215horsepower hydrodynamic grader whichwas the research object. Several different power curves was set in the engine through powercalculation, variable-power control strategy for the engine was proposed based the workinggears of transmission. On this basis, matching and calculating for the dynamic system wascompleted, and the rationality of matching result was evaluated according to certain indexes.With the DCF controller produced by Inter Control company as hardware and theProsyd1131as software development platform, program for variable-power control andelectronic throttle control which could run successfully was developed for the new graderprototype. Performance experiments including traction and fuel economy were conducted forfurther checking the rationality of variable-power control and matching result. Result of theexperiments shows: the new grader prototype using variable-power control can meet thedemand for traction, improve traction efficiency under low and medium load, achieve less slip,reduce fuel consumption in the condition of engine idling or grader no-load driving.
