The rapid pace of urbanization has promoted the high-speed developmentof urban economy, but it also brought a number of questions, such as urban villages. Manyurban villages in cities, especially those in big cities, have become the synonym of low renthousing or the gathering place of migrant workers, which are totally irreconcilable with theoverall outlook, outlay and the image of the cities. The villages’ unique culture and historyare disappearing due to the similarities of the outlay, the construction forms and the outdoorlayout of each village. Some urban villages even have no landmark constructions or signs ofits uniqueness. The living conditions of the urban villages can be described as dirty, messyand disorder. Besides, the constructions’ narrow separation space does not fit therequirement of ventilation and lighting. Meanwhile, huge safety loopholes exist in the urbanvillages. So it is a necessary step to transform the urban villages. When reconstructed, the urban villages are integrated into cities, making themselves nodifferent with other parts of the cities. As a result, the city’s history is cut apart, and thehistory, culture and customs of the original village totally disappeared. So the reconstructionof the urban villages must be harmonious with the main part of the city, with the aim toserve the main city, as well as supplement the functions of the city and upgrade the overalllook of the city. Meanwhile, more attention should be paid to the landscape designs of theoutdoor space rather than the indoor environment in the reconstruction of the urban villages.By issuing questionnaires and interviewing the villagers, the author has a morethorough understanding of the urban villages’ economy, culture and politics, as well as thevillagers’ intentions. The author also summarizes the villagers’ acceptable factors and thekey factors in reconstruction, analyzes the current reconstruction modes of the urban villages, and extracts the factors relevant with landscape designs.By employing the “city image theory” of Kevin Lynch, the thesis analyzes the roads, boundaries, area, nodal points and landmarks of the urban villages. By integrating with thefour factors of landscape, which include garden architecture, terrain and roads, plants andwater bodies, the thesis put city functions, city images and landscape designs into thereconstruction of urban villages. In the last part, the thesis put forward some suggestions ofurban villages’ reconstruction, with the hope to provide some thoughts and advice for the future reconstruction of urban village.
