Nowadays, power electronic technology has been used more and more, and that hascreated a big problem of harmonic. Harmonic is a serious problem of power quality, whichcan make the sensitive load fault. Guangzhou Broadcasting Network (GZBN) was beset bythe harmonic because of a lot using of nonlinear load, it has to find a way to eliminate theharmonic. In that case, the article had designed a filter for GZBN. Passive filter has theadvantage of simple structure, less investment, high reliability and less running costs; it is themost common harmonic filter. The filter that this article had designed is a passive filter, theproblem of the filter elements designing had been discussed.This article had analyzed the structure and the operating principle of the passive filter,and further analyzing of parameter which affects filter function had been made.The method of designing a passive filter was been discussed: the method of the leastreactive capacity, the method of reactive compensation and the method of ensure theovervoltage of the capacitor is accord.The electrical data of the GZBN’s power system had been measured, and the problemexist was analyzed. With the data, the design of filter can been develop. The three methodsaforementioned had been used to calculate the parameter of the filter. With all this work, thedesign of the filter was done.With the design of filter, the very filter was build and installed. After the filter come intoservice, the electrical data of the GZBN’s power system had been measured. Compare withthe previous data, we can analyze the effect of the filter. The result was, the filter had greatlyimproved the harmonic problem and more behind, the power factor of the system had raiseand the loss had reduced.The dynamic performance of the filter was analyzed, with the mathematical model. Then,using the ATP-EMTP to simulate the filter’s circuit and get the wave form of the voltage andthe current. The simulation result showed that the filter met the reliable requirement of thepower system.
