Building structures have broken through their traditional forms with the constantimprovement of the mass culture and aesthetic standards. Numbers of large-scale andcomplex steel structures have been built with attractive, new and unique appearance.Accompanied by the rapid development of the building and construction industry, designand constructional abilities of large-scale steel structures have not only become importantparameters for evaluating a country’s building scientific and technological level, but alsorepresent the level of national culture and civilization. Along with the success of holding2008Beijing Olympic Games,2010Shanghai World Expo and Guangzhou Asian Games, Chinahas introduced a bunch of world stunning large-scale steel structures, such as the NationalGrand Theater, the "bird’s nest" and a large number of other steel structures with internationalinfluence. These steel structures have made a breakthrough in the construction technologybeyond their unique charming appearance. With their presence, the large-scale steel structureindustry in China is steeping into a new era of both opportunities and challenges. Therefore, itis necessary to perform further analysis and research on the technical essentials being foundduring construction, so that these new and relatively immature construction technologies canbe widely applied in the near future, and to further improve the constructible ability ofconstruction companies and the technical content of the entire industry.Combined with a real project example, this paper has systematically discussed onvarious construction methods of steel structures, such as bulk-assembly method athigh-altitude, stripping or partitioning installation method, sliding method at high-altitude,integral elevating method, integral lifting method, integral jacking method, folding andunfolding method etc. This paper has also demonstrated how theories were put into the realengineering practice, and has proved the reliability of these construction technologies, whichcan provide practical reference value for other similar construction projects in the future.Considering the requirements of construction time frame, construction quality,construction safety and all other aspects, integral lifting method with computerizedsynchronous control were adopted as the actual construction method, utilizing a valuableengineering theory system. In order to complete this construction task within a reasonableconstruction budget and satisfy all quality control and safety requirements, studies have foundthat layout of lifting points, installation of proper lifting devices, compliance of constructionplanning and procedures, closely monitoring during construction are the key points in usingthe hydraulic integral lifting method. Also, the most important aspect during field monitoring is the horizontal displacement.The integral lifting method with computerized synchronous control being discussed inthis paper has been successfully applied in the construction of a large-scale steel structure. Aset of new construction technologies suitable for building large-scale steel structures has beendeveloped through this engineering practice, and will provide positive guidance for othersimilar construction projects.
