This work was supported by NSFC (NO.51078299) and the Scientific and Technological Project of the Ministry of Transport (NO.2010353342240).To improve driver’s perception information to make drivers pre-control vehicle speed which adapts with the road geometry by using edge rate bars is important to improve velocity reduction and road traffic safety.Combination with engineering psychology, traffic psychology, vehicle dynamics, kinematics, road design theory, mathematical statistics and the macro-analysis and micro-analysis, the mechanism responsible for the reduction influenced by aspect ratio, void-solid ratio and angle based on edge rate bars was revealed in this paper.3aspect ratio were chosen based on risk perception of speed.3void-solid ratio were chosen based on vision persistence.4angles were chosen based on zollner illusion. Road experiments were carried out to reveal the mechanism responsible for the reduction. The results show that aspect ratio, void-solid ratio and angle have effects on velocity reduction by edge rate bars. The greater the aspect ratio, the greater the velocity reduction in the aspect ratio experiments. The greater the void-solid ratio, the greater the velocity reduction in the void-solid ratio experiments. The greater the angle, the greater the velocity reduction in the angle experiments. Temporal frequency have synergetic mutual function in the impact on the deceleration with aspect ratio, void-solid ratio and angle.SEM was taken as the tool for analyzing effects of factors on the reduction. The results show that speed reduction were significantly improved by the5influence factors, and the sequence was void-solid ratio> speed> temporal frequency> angle>aspect ratio, that the effect on deceleration was greater than the effect on absolute value of speed deviation, that speed and temporal frequency have a synergistic and positive effect on risk perception of driver, that aspect ratio, void-solid ratio and angle have a synergistic and positive effect on reduction of perceptual lane, that reduction of perceptual lane and risk perception of driver have a synergistic and positive effect on manipulative behavior of driver, and that on condition that the temporal frequency is proper, aspect ratio, void-solid ratio and angle should be foremost in designer’s thinking to improve edge rate bars’effect on velocity reduction.
