ABSTRACT:Corrugated steel culvert develops rapidly in our country because they are more economical and have shorter construction periods compared to concrete bridges and culverts, but the research of this structure is not kept pace with the needs of development. Our country does not have our own specifications and the design mainly refers to the foreign specifications. There are a lot of inconveniences, so the mechanical properties research on this structure has significant theoretical and practical value.In this paper, the mechanical properties of high fill corrugated steel culvert pipe are researched through field tests and finite element simulation methods. Two corrugated steel pipe culvert constructions are monitored which span are2.5m (vault filling height18.6m) and4m (vault filling height16.4m). Displacement, strain and soil pressure numerical are got. By analyzing and comparing the measured data, some general regulations in the deformation and internal forces of these structures are obtained.Two dimensions finite element models are established. And the effectiveness of the FEM and the reasonability of the test are proved through compared the calculation results with measured data. By comparing the calculated and experimental values of the model, nonlinear soil pressure formula are suggested to calculation soil pressure under high fill. For high fill corrugated steel pipe culverts load reduction problem, base on a deeply buried actual project, the finite element model was set up and the effect of load reduction before and after backfilling soft material above the culvert are analyzed. The results show that vertical soil pressure above the culvert decreases by50%. The validity and rationality of such load reduction method is verified.
