Water, as the source of life, is the basic elements of human survival and development,is important and special natural resources. With the speeding up of urbanization,it havebrought many problems, such as water shortage, water quality deterioration, waterpollution, waterflood, drought disasters. Now landscape green space system in urbandemands plenty of water every year, but there are not enough available water. The rain, asone of the most immediate and economical water, has a huge potential for use and shouldbe got more attention.Firstly, the author studied a large number of domestic and foreign literatures,investigated several city parks, inquired something about park management, communicatedwith some greening workers, and analyzed the feasibility, advantages and disadvantages ofrainwater utilization in city parks, the water crisis and the real water situation in China.Secondly, the paper introduced the importance of rainwater utilization system incontemporary urbanization process, explained the necessity of urban rainwater to useinnovation of park construction, and discussed rainwater utilization system in thedeveloped countries such as America, Britain, Australia and New Zealand. According tothe main functions, the paper divided the advanced rainwater utilization measures into (I)savings measures,(II) infiltration measures,(III) filter measures, and analyzed some detailmethods such as (1) Detention ponds,(2) Green roofs,(3) Container planting pool,(4)Grass swale,(5)Infiltration ditch,(6) Bioretention ponds,(7) Ecological wetland,(8)Vegetated filter strips,(9) Filtering tree pool,etc.Thirdly, the paper analyzed in detail on the successful cases of rainwater utilization inthe garden at home and abroad. Most of the cases won awards at the American Society ofLandscape Architectures. They not only has got the acceptance of many well-knownexperts and scholars, but also integrated the practice of rainwater utilization. In addition,Beijing Olympic park, the most successful case of rainwater utilization in China, wasintroduced in the paper. The success can be a direction in the future practice and a role ofguidance.Finally, the paper chose Baoding Botanical Park as an experimental site, proposed therationalization proposal and made a general evaluation on economic benefits, social benefits and ecological benefits.The paper emphasized the importance of rainwater utilization in urban garden, andstarting from aspects of the residents’ concept, national policy and foreign experienceproposed suggestions, which provided a reference for landscape designers, got moreattention to water resources problems, and created more beautiful and ecological landscapewith the function of rainwater utilization in city gardens.
