To bridge project, design plan determines the project function and scale on the whole. Once the design scheme, the life cycle cost can be roughly determined. In real life, when people choose bridge designs from altermatives, focus only on the construction cost, ignored bridge maintenance cost. Reasonable designs should be embodied in meet the function under the condition of the lowest life cycle cost.How to choose a right bridge designs is a technical problem as well as a economical problem. Applied VE choose designs is proved to be useful, Its main target is how to realize the function with the lowest life cycle cost. Through forming VE team to define, arrange and evaluate bridge function, we can calculate the bridge function coefficient. The cost coefficient of bridge programs is obtained by estimating the bridge life cycle cost. According to standard method of cost estimation for highway infrastructure projects and local market price, we can calculate the bridge construction cost. Bridge projects management cost, maintenance cost is estimated according to local management unit price, local maintenance unit price and its quantity. The bridge testing cost is estimated according to the bridge testing charge standard announced by local traffic department and the number of bridge testing. Taking a bridge as a case, the paper introduces how to use VE, bridge life cycle cost to choose bridge designs.
