This paper reviews the research work on the rubber pads used for high-speed railway tracks in domestic and foreign countries. some problems of the current research have been put forward. The research direction and significance of this paper has been raised based on the literature review. The type B of the rubber pads for the fastener WJ8, used in hangzhou-ningbo passenger dedicated line, is taken as a case study. A series of tests on the materials and mechanical properties of the rubber pads has been carried out based on the national standard test specification, including density, hardness and compression performance test. Simulations on the rubber pad have also been carried out, including the whole pad and a quarter of the pad, using Abaqus finite element software on the basis of experiment. The calculated results are compared and validated with those available from the tests. Based on above work, finite element models for the rail are built. The track rubber pad used for a dedicated high speed passenger line was researched in this paper, which was supported by National Natural Science Foundation of China (51078361). A design study, ranging from the thickness, the number, depth and width of the grooves, has been carried out to evaluate the stiffness and the internal stresses on this type of the rubber pads. In order to reduce the stiffness of the rubber pad and to achieve the goal of a high elasticity of the ballastless track, a new type of rubber pad, with a thickness higher than the existing product and with partially supported grooves, has been designed. Based on the result from the finite element analysis, the internal stress distribution of the pad is reasonable under the condition of the given wheel load. It is expected that the new rubber pads with lower stiffness has better performance than the current ones in terms of vibration and noise reduction. This design can be taken as a reference for the rubber pads used in high-speed railway tracks.
