With the increasing of rapid social and economic development and the requirements of people on living conditions during the last decade of years, real estate industry has made a expeditious expansion. Under the pressure of current state regulation, opportunities and challenges come at the same time. To meet the demands of the intense market competition, developers have not only to provide higher quality products, but also to shorten the development cycle to ensure the progress of the project. As for the design stage which stands at the initial phase of the project, many uncertainties are always to be fronted with, which makes it a most critical part for the entire project management. Considering of the frequent situation in real estate development that the design work lags behind schedule and subsequently affects construction period and quality, actions should be taken. In order to solve such kind of problem, the management method of critical chain is introduced. From the progress of schedule development to schedule control, combined with some communication management method, this study is expanded. With the introduction of critical chain method as theoretical basis, take the design project of Shanghai W residential area for example, how to develop the project schedule and progress control using the critical chain method is studied. The purpose is to shorten the duration of project, reduce the uncertainties’ impact, and to ensure the project be completed on time. The exploratory study on the use of critical chain method in reality was made, and the result was hoped to be able to provide a reference for similar projects on progress management.
