Wheelsets are critical component on railway trains. The reliability of wheelsets is directly linked with the safety of the railway trains. In this article, a online monitoring system for the wheelset geometry parameters is introduced, based on optoelectronic technology.This system contains multiple measurement units. Each measurement is controlled by a microcontroller. The measurement units consist of three subsystems, optical subsystem, mechanical subsystem and electrical subsystem. This article aims to provide a comprehensive introduction of the design ideas of these subsystems and the software in this monitoring system, especially, the methods of data processing and three dimensional reconstruction.In the measurement units, the electrical circuit is based on a microcontroller(C8051f064, Silicon Laboratories Inc.); communication subsystem is based on CAN bus controller(SJA1000, Philips Semiconductors); the mechanical system is controlled by a stepper motor(86BYG350BL,Syntron Inc.);the measurement is based on laser displacement sensor(LK-H080, Keyence Corp.). On the computer, the data are processed by a custom designed Matlab(Math Works, Inc.)program. After the data processing, the three dimensional model of the wheelset tread surface is reconstructed and visualized. Finally, based on the data processing, some critical geometry parameters of wheelsets are analyzed quantitatively.
