With the acceleration of China’s urbanization process and the growth of urban population, the traffic demand is increasing rapidly. As the backbone of urban public transportation systems, urban rail transit bears heavy transportation task. Especially, in the peak hours, major holidays, and special time when kinds of large-scale activities or exhibitions are held, urban rail transit station is more likely to hold a large number of passenger flow in a short period of time. And this number of passenger flow is beyond the station’s daily bearing capacity of passenger and transport flow, which will undoubtedly affect the normal operation organization work of the station. Therefore, how to respond quickly and efficiently to keep the order of the station and to ensure the normal operation of urban rail transit system is a worthwhile issue for study.Under the background of sudden large passenger flow in urban rail transit, based on the analysis of different conditions, this paper discusses and studies the strategies of urban rail transit operation from two aspects, the station passenger flow organization and the line transport organization. The main contents are as follows:First, this paper describes the causes of sudden large passenger flow, passengers’ characteristics of that sudden situation, and the level of the situation. This part analyzes the causes of sudden large passenger flow, and clarifies the difference between the large passenger flow and daily passenger flow from passenger characteristics, passenger flow density and speed, etc. Besides, the paper divides the sudden large passenger flow condition into five levels according to the revising data in the existing study.Second, the paper analyzes the capacity of urban rail transit including the transport capacity and the station bearing capacity. The urban rail transport capacity includes throughout capacity and carrying capacity, while the station bearing capacity includes the throughout capacity and accommodation capacity of passenger flow.Third, the paper summarizes the measures of urban rail transit passenger flow organizations and the plan of transportation organization. The measures of urban rail passenger flow organization include the improvement of the throughout situation of bottleneck point in the station and the four level control of the passenger line. The paper also proposes emergency plan responding to the sudden large passenger flow. As to the transportation organization, this paper analyzes the factors such as the alternatives and scheme comparison of train stopping and routing, and also correct the turn-back capacity of special routing.Finally, the paper establishes the urban rail transit organization strategy responding to sudden large passenger flow. This strategy is based on the different level of sudden large passenger flow, the urban rail transit capacity, passenger flow organization and transportation organization.
