Turnout, a connecting and switching equipment between the rail tracks, is quite a vital part of the whole rail system. To carry out its particular function, turnout has distinctive features in design and style, which are significantly different from the rail tracks. For example, though relatively weak in structure, the switch rail and the guard rail will be subject to strong impact while the train is steering. The special function of turnout determines its importance. Whether the turnout is maintained in a good status will directly affect the safety and smoothness of the running train. Therefore, it is necessary to detect the turnout regularly and keep it in a good condition, so as to ensure the safety the train’s operation. The main method currently used to detect the turnout is still to measure the geometric appearance of the turnout manually to collect data, such as the gauge. These traditional manners are not efficient enough, and the collected data is not good for storage and analysis, which fail to meet the new requirements of current development of railway transport. This paper introduces the manual methods which are currently used to detect turnout. By using the three-dimensional structure-light scanning equipment, point cloud data of some key parts of a turnout are generated. After data processing and programming, they are measured and displayed by computer. Combined with some other equipments, these data can be used to create three-dimensional projection images, create a three-dimensional vision.
