Concrete filled steel tube (CFST) structures have been widely used because it has the advantages of high vertical bearing capacity, convenient construction and high comprehensive benefit. Many scholars have done a lot of researches on the bearing capacity of CFST component, connection between beam and column, fire resistance capacity of CFST structure and the seismic performance of the CFST structure. Nowadays people’s demands of the structures’ seismic performance became higher and higher, especially after the earthquakes in recent years. So the seismic performance of the CFST structure is an important aspect in the researches of the CFST structure.Installing energy dissipation devices on the structure is an effective method to improve the seismic performance of the structure. The parameters, numbers and locations of the energy dissipation devices are important factors which affect the seismic performance of the structure when designing the structure with energy dissipation devices. In order to obtain the appropriate parameters of the energy dissipation devices, and fully use the seismic performance of the energy dissipations, optimization is a necessity study and has scientific significance.In this paper, study on the optimization of the CFST frame with energy dissipation devices base on the particle swarm optimization (PSO) is conducted, the main works are as follows:(1) Summarized the developments and research status of the CFST structures and PSO, and analyzed the significance of optimizing the CFST frame with energy dissipation devices based on PSO.(2) The mathematical model (including the design variables, the constraints and the objective function) is established according to the characteristics of the CFST frame, and the analysis program and the program of PSO, GSO and GA are written. Besides the feasibility of the application of the three algorithms on optimizing the CFST frame with energy dissipation devices is verified through an example.(3) The parameters of the PSO are studied and the appropriate values of the parameters for PSO when optimizing the CFST frame with energy dissipation devices are analyzed.(4) Genetic algorithm (GA) is combined with PSO, which called hybrid particle swarm optimization (HPSO). HPSO has the advantages of GA and PSO. The ranger of GSO is introduced into HPSO, the new algorithm is called hybrid particle swarm optimization with ranger (HPSOR). And the optimization on the parameters of the energy dissipation devices installed on the CFST frame, which under EL-centro wave, is conducted by HPSO and HPSOR respectively. The results show that it is feasible to obtain the better parameters of the energy dissipation devices installed on the CFST frame by HPSO and HPSOR. Compared with the structure without optimization, the maximum inter story drift angles and the maximum moments of columns and beams of the structure decreased after optimization.(5) Buckling restrained braces and viscous dampers are installed on the3D CFST frames respectively, and HPSO is used to optimize the two structures. Time history analysis is performed on the structure before and after optimization. The results show that compared with the structure before optimization, the maximum inter story drift angles, the maximum moments of columns and beams and the story shears of the structure which after optimized by HPSO decreased.
