The first reinforced concrete ribbed arch bridge was built in1961in our country. Because of its large spanning capacity, less material cost and low construction difficulty, it became the first choice for the bridge engineers to across the V-shape and U-shape river valley. However, because of the limited knowledge in construction and design at that time, most of the reinforced concrete ribbed arch bridges appeared damages with different degrees, which endanger the safety, serviceability and durability of the bridge. Currently, a part of the damaged bridges have been strengthened and reconstructed, but there are much more in urgent need of regulation reinforcement which are still in the negative disease operation. The main contents in this paper are as follows:Firstly, the common diseases along with the causes in reinforced concrete ribbed arch bridge have been analyzed in detail.Secondly, the Tashanwan Bridge is used as an example of engineering practice. The FEM of the Tashanwan Bridge is established according to the evaluation result. Then, the eigenvalues, stresses in elastic stage, bearing capacity and overall stability of the whole bridge are analyzed using the FEM. These analysis provide theoretical data for subsequent strengthening and maintenance design. Finally, the disease maintenance and strengthening methods of reinforced concrete ribbed arch bridge are introduced. According to the present situation of old Tashanwan Bridge, the strengthening design is carried out by increasing the section near the arch springer. Then, the load tests have been taken to evaluate the reinforcement effects, illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed reinforcement method.
