After decades’development, electric bicycle, which is gradually replacing traditional bikes, has become the preferred travel tool in medium-and lower-income groups. As the number of electric bicycles increases, more spotlights have been shed on problems triggered. However, by reason of its novelty, existing achievements fail to conduct in-depth studies on electric bicycle, especially those fundamental studies concerning its traffic characteristics. By carrying out a large number of field surveys, this paper therefore launches a comprehensive research on traffic characteristics in the following aspects:(1) To propose the definition, research methodology and statistical indicators of the basic parameters for electric bicycle flow, and to gather peak hour factors (PHF) in5minutes and15minutes as well as the saturation flow rate of signalized intersections, and to work out the theoretical travel capacity of electric bicycle with the minimum safe distance;(2) To recommend the ideal length and width for electric bicycle by consulting its current length, width and speed, and to propose a law of velocity distribution, the value range and suggested vales of velocity acceleration and deceleration for electric bicycle, together with the minimum safety viewing distance corresponded to different velocity;(3) To study the arriving law of electric bicycle at signalized intersection, and further prove that the arriving number of vehicles at a certain interval matches a Poisson Distribution under the theory of mathematical statistics; to analyze the accumulation characteristics during red light as well as the releasing process, velocity and its distribution during green light, the paper investigated the ten intersections and sections of ChengDu City;(4) To explore the law of electric bicycle in crossing Right-turn vehicle gap with binary logistic regression model, and to calibrate and evaluate the significance of the parameters;(5) To bring forth a package of strategies and measures for management and control,on the base of the ideas and practical experience about traffic static and in light of status of traffic problems related to electric bicycle and electric bicycle’s traffic characteristics.
