The vehicle provides a convenient travel but also brings couple some problems of airpollution because of the emissions. As the requirement for the quality of life and sustainabledevelopment, the environment performance of the vehicle becomes more and more strict.Development of electric vehicle technology is one important way to solve this problem.Hub motor electric vehicle, due to the cancellation of the traditional powertrain, withgood controllability, high transmission efficiency, body interior space utilization, ease ofmodular production, and many other advantages, has a huge market prospects. But afterusing hub motors,unspring mass increased significantly, making the ride deterioration ofthe car. And the tire ground performance deterioration not only affects the security of thevehicle, but also brings the hub motor assembly huge impact, accelerating the fatiguedamage process. Increase in unspring mass also affects vehicle handling and stability.This article relays on the863project “The next generation of high-performance pureelectric vehicle power system technology platform development”, in-depth researched theeffect of hub motor on vehicle handling stability and ride comfort. This article contains threeaspects includes theoretical analysis, experimental research and optimization.Firstly, generalize the effect of hub motor on vehicle dynamics. Through the establishment of a simplified model,the impacts of unspring mass on ride comfort and road holding are analyzed. The same method also analyzed the effect on steering wheel returnability due to the increased unsprung mass of the car.Based on the theoretical analysis, design7kindles of vehicles to simulate how the hub motor effect the vehicle. Overall handling stability and ride comfort test were carried out by adding different weight on wheels. Through the test data processing and analysis, summed up the impact of the law.This article also presents optimization method to improve the handling stability and ridecomfort of the hub motor electric vehicle. Analysis the effect of velocity, road roughness,stiffness and damping of suspension, seat and tires on the ride comfort. Point out thematching method of suspension stiffness and damping to balance ride comfort and the tireground performance. Give some advices to the vehicle manufacturers and the motordesigners.
