Biological mulching technology becomes one of important soil managements for theimprovement of soil properties and production of crop yield, is widely used in forest production.Prunus salicina plantation in Guizhou karst region was taken as the research forest stand. For therecognisation of the influences of biological mulching on soil properties, forest surface soil wastreated with different types of mulch materials and different amount. The main results aredescribed as follows:(1)Mulching could make soil moisture increase and temperature stabilize. With the increaseof mulching quantities, its ameliorative function was strengthened;the effect of Trifolium pretensewas a little better than those of other mulching materials.(2) Soil N、 P contents, especially availablitity nutrient, obviously increased aftermulching.Upmost nutrient contents were found in the treatment of7.5kg/m2mulch;Nutrientcontents of different mulch material:the first is Trifolium pretense, the next are stragalussiniucus-Lysimachia christinae Hanc(e1:3)、Medicago sativa-Lysimachia christinae Hanc(e1:3)and the last is Conyza blinii Levl.(3)With the increase of mulching quantity, the availability of Fe、Mn、Cu、Zn wereimproved. The treatments among different materials had a little difference.(4)The effects of urease and phosphatase activities after mulching was basically identical, theperformance of different treatments on enzyme activity was:H7.5>H5.0>H2.5>CK,H5.0>Y5.0>M5.0>CK.The activities of urease and phosphatase had significant positive correlationwith TN、TP、hydrolysis nitrogen and available phosphorus content.(5During the experiment test, soil moisture and enzyme activity presented a trend of gradualdecline.Meanwhile soil N、P contents reduced firstly and then increased, especially in the0~10cm soil layer. In conclusion, biological mulching could be effective on the soil properties, and the impact onthe surface soil(0~10cm) was especially significant. The more mulch applied, the more obviousfor the improvement of soil properties. And the use of Trifolium pretense mulching was superiorto the effects of other materials. Therefore, using mulching treatment in the karst area wasavailable to improve soil environment.
