Salvia przewalskii Maxim belonging to Subgenus Salvia, the family Labiatae, was widely distributed in the west of China. It has been used as traditional Chinese medicines for a long history. The activities of S. przewalskii were very similar to those of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge, a well known Chinese herbal medicine, such as antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant activity, anti-platelet aggregation and so on. In order to find angiogenesis inhibitors, we had studied on the chemical constituents of S. przewalskii, which was collected from Li jiang, Yunnan Province. The main results were summarized as below:1. The study on the chemical constituents of S. przewalskii:27compounds were isolated and purified from Salvia przewalskii Maxim by chromatography. Their structures were determined as:tanshinone IIA (1), tanshinone Ⅰ (2), tanshinlactone (3), danshenxinkun B (4),1,2-dihydrotanshinone I (5), crypotanshinone (6), methyl tanshinonate (7), tanshindiol B (8),2α,3β-dihydroxyursa-12-en-28-oic acid (9), sugiol (10), ferruginol (11),3-hydroxybenzaldehyde (12), rosmanol (13), isorosmanol (14), przewaquinone A (15), przewaquinone B (16), carnosol (17), danshenxinkun A (18),12-methoxy-carnosic (19), kumatakenin (20), acacatin (21),5,6,4’-trihydroxy-7,3’-dimethoxyflavone (22),6-hydroxysalvonolone (23), danshenspiroketallactone (24), dihydrotanshinone I (25), ursolic acid (26), pomolic acid (27). Among them, compounds12,20-22and27were isolated from the genus Salvia for the first time, compounds8,9,13and14were isolated from this plant for the first time.2. The study on the angiogenesis activity of S. przewalskii:The antiangiogenic activity of the extract of S. przewalskii and the compounds isolated from it were tested with the chicken chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) neovascularisation model. The results showed that three fractions (Petroleum ether-EtOAc9:1,3:1,1:1) exhibited antiangio genic activity, and the fraction of Petroleum ether-EtOAc1:1exhibited significantly antiangiogenic activity. On the contrary, the fraction of Petroleum ether-EtOAc3:7showed marked proangiogenic activity. Meanwhile, nine compounds exhibited some antiangiogenic activity. They were tanshinone IIA, tanshinone I, crypotanshinone, tanshindiol B,2α,3β-dihydroxyursa-12-en-28-oic acid, sugiol, przewaquinone A, przewaquinone B and acacatin. Their active sequence was przewaquinone A> przewaquinone B> tanshinone I> tanshinone IIA> sugiol>2a,3β-dihydroxyursa-12-en-28-oic acid> acacatin> crypotanshinone> tanshindiol B.In addition to the work presented above, chemical constituents and bioactivities of genus Salvia were reviewed.
