The plant of Salvia, perennial herb, is a rich source of diterpenoids with structural diversity. The roots of S. przewalskii have been used as traditional Chinese medicine (called Gan-Su-Dan-Shen).28 compounds were isolated from the EtOH extracts of the roots of S. przewalskii by means of column chromatography, preparative thin layer chromatography, high pressure liquid chromatography and recrystallization. Their structures were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic analysis, including UV、IR、MS、1D/2D NMR and X-Ray diffraction experiment. Six of them were new compounds, including a novel diterpenoid Sp03, three new C21 abietane-type diterpenoids Sp04-Sp06, and two new abietane derivatives Sp07 and Sp26.The roots of Inula helenium L. (Asteraeae, named Tu-Mu-Xiang) have been used for anti-inflammatory, promoting digestion, relieving phlegm. Three new sesquitepenoids, a unusual dimeric eudesmanolide Ih02, a new noreudesmanolide Ih03, and a new secoguaiene Ih04, together with 13 known sesquiterpenoids, were isolated from the roots of I. helenium. Their structures were elucidated by comprehensive spectroscopic analyses. The absolute configurations of the new compounds were defined via the experimental and computational optical rotation and CD data. The plausible biosynthetic pathways of some new compounds are discussed. The antibacterial activities of isolated compounds were tested. Several compounds showed stronger activity to different bacteria, such as compounds Sp01, Sp03 and Sp17 to Bacillus aerogenes, Sp08, Spl2and Ih08 to Escherichia coil, Sp10 to Bacillus subtilis, and Sp02 to Bacillus megaterium. And other compounds were weak active or inactive. The results of this thesis will be favor for the research on phytochemistry, the relationship of structure and activity, biological activity, pharmacology and screening prodrug. Moreover, they are significant in providing scientific evidence to further development and exploit of traditional Chinese medicine resources, especially in the northwest, and finally attain the modernization of traditional Chinese medicine.
