ObjectiveTo analyze the infection of transfusion-transmitted diseases among voluntary blood donors in Taiyuan and evaluate the residual risk of developing HIV through blood transfusion after screened by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) with the aim of providing scientific bases for recruiting low-risk blood donors.MethodWith the help ELISA, test the syphilis antibodies, HIV antibodies, HBsAg and anti-HCV antibodies in the plasma sample from voluntary blood donors who donated blood during2008-2012, use velocity method to test ALT and analyze the influence of year, age, gender, education and profession on infection.ResultsDuring2008-2012, there were389,796voluntary blood donors in Taiyuan,54.33%of which are initial blood donors while the rest are repeat blood donors. The average infection rates of syphilis, HIV, HBV and HCV in the5years are0.584%,0.021%,0.709%and0.848%respectively. While the infection rate of HIV increases every year, each of the other figures changes following irregular patterns. According to the result of anti-HIV screening, initial blood donors’residual risk of being infected by HIV is1/138064while the repeat blood donors’1/305343and voluntary blood donors’1/95075.ConclusionThe infection rates of HIV among voluntary blood donors are relatively low but tend to rise. The infection rates of syphilis, HBV and HCV are high in the recent5years and change in irregular patterns. Since transfusion-transmitted diseases still threaten blood safety, it is essential to inquire related matters of high-risk groups, such as farmers, workers, and people whose educational level is low, before they donate blood.
