Let us imagine there is a group of people sitting in a room.They might bebusinessmen,or women, politicians, trade unionists or scientists,etc. They want tohold a discussion but speak total different languages, none of the participants speaksthe other’s language well enough for the discussion to be successful. So they invitesomeone else in, who knows both languages, to get across each other’s message inturn.,and that person is an interpreter.Nowadays, fast advancement of global economy and the ever increasinginternational business and economic exchanges have fueled the growth ofprofessional interpreters who should not only be good in linguistics bu also cope withall kinds of business activities, especially those complex business negotiations.As weall know, a set of requirements or standards is essential for regulating a certainoccupation. However, many interpreters working in business area are not qualifiedenough, leading to a huge gap between the high demand and low supply in the market,it is an urgent task to introduce a set of norms to evaluate business interpretation.Inbusiness interpreting, professional norms are not only convenient for institutions toassess the performance of the interpreters but can also provide a system or mechanismto improve their work. Furthermore, interpreting training needs effective and practicalevaluation to guarantee its training programs.In this thesis, first, I will give an overall introduction of business interpretationwhich includes definitions, history, basic features, qualifications of professionalinterpreters as well as criteria of their work. Second, I will make an elaboration oncriteria in business interpretation, in this part, I will give some cases to show how toapply these criteria into evaluation in real practice under different situations. The thirdpart explores various methods to improve relevant techniques for betteraccomplishing the task of business interpreting.
