| The Victoria Jiangsu Business Placement(VJBP)Program,organized by Jiangsu Federation of Industry and Commerce(JSFIC),aims at enhancing communication and cooperation among enterprises from Jiangsu Province and Victoria State of Australia.From May 10 to May 18,the reporter participated in this program,mainly assisting Philip,the general manager of Shadowfax Wines,an Australian wine company,in the business match-making activities.Her responsibilities included: first,providing interpreting services;second,searching and contacting Chinese enterprises for potential cooperation;third,making arrangements for meetings.The reporter performed interpreting in different scenarios,in negotiation,in classroom,as an escort.The interpreting project received positive feedback.During the project,the reporter encountered three types of problems: insufficient knowledge reserve,including industry terminology and encyclopedic knowledge;ineffective processing of long sentences;and confusion about the interpreter’s role.After critically reviewing the audio recordings,analyzing the transcripts,and drawing upon previous studies,the reporter proposes three solutions to the problems respectively: first,make full preparation in advance,including relevant industry terminology and information,and encyclopedic knowledge;second,enhance the ability to process long sentences both in comprehension and interpretation by inferring the speaker’s intention and making emergency responses when information is lost;and third,assume proper roles as an interpreter and a coordinator in the workplace scenario.Based on thorough analysis of the first-hand linguistic data,this report will provide assistance for potential business interpreters,and enrich the research on business interpretation. |
