A Report On Interpreting A Business Meetingon Sports Equipment Sales

In the era of information,all countries in the world are engaging themselves in communication and cooperation with one another.However,due to the language barrier,interpreting has become increasingly indispensable during exchanges,especially in business transactions.Meanwhile,the interpreter,as the subject of interpreting activity,draws more and more attention.Traditionally,an interpreter always assumes the role as a mouthpiece of the source speaker and takes on the responsibility of linguistic message transfer in the process of interpreting.However,as for business interpreting,interpreters are required to exert versatile capabilities and take more active roles to achieve better communication and understanding because of the instantaneity and flexibility of interpreting.This Report consists of five Chapters and adopts the methodology of descriptive research and case study.Chapter 1 introduces the general framework of this Report.Chapter 2 is a description of the background information on the business meeting and the Chinese and Polish parties involved in the meeting.Shandong Feierkang Sports Facilities Co.,Ltd(FEK)is the Chinese party and has cooperated with the Polish company since 2010.Chapter 3 recounts all the preparations that FEK and the interpreter have made before the meeting.These preparations are unfolded from the perspectives of subject-based knowledge and setting layout.Chapter 4 is the post-interpreting analysis,which is the crucial part of this Report.The analysis is unfolded from the perspective of the role of interpreter.The roles the author has assumed in the interpreting can be summarized as an information transmitter,decision-making assistant and intermediary.The interpreter intends to demonstrate that an interpreter can assume more active roles and play an essential part in interpreting activities to achieve better communication and understanding.Besides,although sound preparations have been made before the meeting,there are still some improper treatments during interpreting,such as improper use of personal pronouns and side conversations with other participants,which requires further improvement.Chapter 5 is a summary of this Report.This Report aims to provide some references for other interpreters with the similar situation and anticipates that the future teaching of interpreting will attach greater importance to the initiative of interpreter and arrange more interpreting practices for students to learn when and how to participate in interpreting actively.
