Translation’s Function In Chinese Culture Promotion With Respect To Translator’s Subjectivity

This thesis is aimed at exploring how the translator’s subjectivity into full play inprocess of translation in order to achieve the ideal goal, that is to promote the spreadof Chinese culture, let Chinese culture to go out and further be well understood by theother countries all over the world.The author considers that, translator is the main part of the translation practice andit is usually considered by us as the most active factor in the translation activities.According to the Wikipedia, the translator’s subjectivity is defined as fellow: thetranslator,under the premise of respect for the translation object present thesubjectivity in the process of translation activities in order to attain the translationgoal. Translator’s subjectivity is usually presented in many ways, such as how tohandle the translation process and how to manipulate the cultural effect of thetranslation process including the choice of translated text, comprehension andunderstanding of the original text, how to realize the language conversion, how toattach the translation purposes, and how to choose translation strategies andtranslation methods.1The thesis also includes much analysis of Xu Yuanchong’s translation practice andhis translation theories. As an outstanding translator, Xu has translated many classicalChinese publications, such as Song300、Songs of the South、The Book of Songs、ThreeHundred Tang poems、into English and French, Xu has conveys Chinese culturalessence to other countries through his interpretation, he also opened the way ofmaking Chinese culture be well understood by other countries, while Xu’sachievement is far more than these. Xu has summarized his theories as “Art ofbeautifulization and creation of the best as in rivalry.”2The author mainly analyseshis theories “beautiful in sense, in sound and in form”—translation’s subjectivitytheory;“generalization, equalization and particularization”3—translation’s methodology;“comprehension, appreciation and admiration”—translation’s teleology.The author also presents many examples of Xu’s translation versions in phrases、sentences、rhyme and literary piece to prove that the translator could achieve his goalsof promotion the Chinese culture through initiative the translator’s subjectivity intofull play. And this will also help us to promote our culture keep prosperity anddevelopment and build the cultural foundation for the harmonious society.
