On Translation Of Chinese Menu In Light Of Functionalist Approaches

As the deep going of reform and opening up, China is playing an increasinglysignificant role on the global stage, and thus paid more and more attention to. Chinanot only has a long history and culture, it also attracts people from all over the worldwith its cuisine. However, language diversification has become a barrier incommunication of cuisine cultures between China and the West. Therefore, it is highlydemanded that researches should be taken on issues of Chinese menu translation, forthe sake of the spread of Chinese cuisine culture.Functionalist Approaches was originated from Germany. The Skopostheorie isknown as its core, which considers that it is the skopos that determines the translationstrategies applied. The development of Functionalist Approaches has made arevolutionary impact in the field of pragmatic translation. This systematic theory hasbeen applied in various translation practices. Chinese menu translation is one of those.On the basis of previous studies, this thesis analyzes the application ofFunctionalist Approaches in Chinese menu translation from an innovative perspective,emphasizing the translator’s obligations in translational actions, preventing thelimitations that may be otherwise caused by applying the Skopostheorie solely. Basedon an in-depth study of Chinese cuisine culture in comparison with the West, issueson Chinese menu translation are analyzed. The objects of the research includeprimarily Chinese Menu in English Version, as well as other data from previousstudies and the practice, based on which solutions to various factors involved inChinese menu translation are proposed. Some improper translations in Chinese Menuin English Version are also refined in light of the research.
