The author accomplishes the interpretation of the Speech at the FreshmenInauguration Ceremony by NUS President Professor Tan Chorh Chuan and the eulogyby Lee Hsien Loong for Mrs Lee Kuan Yew. The paper is the report of theinterpretation.First, the author talks about the requirements for qualified interpreters anddescribes the pre-interpretation preparation in details. The pre-interpretation includesthe full understanding of the theme and topic of the speech, the accumulation of theterminologies and background information and the analysis of the audience.In the second part of the thesis, the author analyzes the characteristics of thecorpus and describes the unforeseen circumstances which cause troubles the author.What’s more, the author compares the original speeches and the interpretation of thetwo speeches and figures out the typical mistakes in the interpreting process. Theauthor lists several examples of mistakes and analyzes the mistakes. The mistakesresult from the listening comprehension of Singaporean English pronunciation.According to this, the author analyzes the listening comprehension barriers in thephonetic system and the features of listening comprehension in interpretation. Theinterpreters pay so less attention to Singaporean English than Standard English thatthere are not enough materials for interpreters to deal with Singaporean English. Thus,the author sums up the adaptive methods based on the features of SingaporeanEnglish pronunciation.In the end, the author combines the mistakes and the lessons learned in theinterpretation with her personal experiences and sums up the basic skills,psychological quality and interpretation techniques in order to deliver a successfulinterpretation.
