This paper mainly focuses on the application of syntactic linearity to smoothlyinterpret nominalization formations in E-C simultaneous interpretation. It introducesthe necessity to employ syntactic linearity in E-C simultaneous interpretation, one ofthe major obstacles----nominalization in E-C simultaneous interpretation, and skillsand methods employed to deal with the problem in interpreting nominalization.According to interpretation theories, the basic rules of interpretation and translation, and the analysis on realistic conditions in C-E simultaneous interpretation, the paperputs forward several methods to cope with nominalization formations. In E-C simultaneous interpretation practice, the author found that the concept ofnominalization is not quite the same as that in linguistics. There are many kinds ofnominalization formations including nouns with more than one modifier, prepositionalphrases, infinitives, gerunds or other forms. To deal with them, interpreters should befully aware of all possible conditions and know how to make smooth interpretationwith the guidance of syntactic linearity. And the last part of the paper is the analysis of realistic simultaneous interpretation. The material is taken from MTI class practice and after-class individual practice. In conclusion, this paper finds that certain measures such as addition, repetition, changing part of speech are very useful and practical in dealing with nominalizationformations in E-C simultaneous interpretation. And these measures can make theinterpretation more smooth and the language more authentic. The most importantpoint is, the measures can save time for interpreters.
