This research aims to explore alternative approach to syntactic linearity (SL) in simultaneousinterpreting (SI) apart from the predominant and frequently discussed ones including parsing, anticipation, omission and conversion.Owing to the fact that SI is a multi-tasking process. As Gile’s Effort Model (SI=L+P+M+C) reveals that simultaneous interpreter needs to fully mobilize short-term memory to activatelong-term one while undergoing listening analysis to convert the source language into the targetlanguage successfully by listening and speaking concurrently and achieving synchronizationbetween input and output, which is excessively challenging. Consequently, it is necessary forpractitioners to make sure that the adjustment of word order of both source language and the targetlanguage can reach the minimum with the smallest range and shortest distance to deliver smoothand high-quality interpretation, which makes syntactic linearity indispensable in simultaneousinterpretation as a core strategy.Grounded on patient instructions, classroom training and extra-curriculum practice, hyponymsubstitution will be proposed as a new approach to syntactic linearity. It indicates that interpretersare recommended to deploy correspondingly general words to replace thorny information which isspecific and presents itself as a newcomer. In this way, Fluency and accuracy could beaccomplished. It is not easy to know everything about something while knowing something abouteverything. We aspire to know anything about everything, but we cannot. Bombarded with suchheadaches as a long string of figures, quotations and catch-words, practitioners would feel stressedin spite of sufficient preparations. In those circumstances, hyponym substitution could come outstrong. The above-mentioned strategies will be explained one by one by analyzing and comparingthe video transcripts of different learners. To sum up, the author will focus on conducting further exploration of new approach to SLapart from the predominant ones like parsing, anticipation, omission and conversion in thisdissertation, which is expected to be useful for the learners of A Coursebook of SimultaneousInterpreting.
